So you’ve just picked up your first automatic drywall taping tool and you’re pumped to start drywall taping faster than ever before...but when you go to fill your taper for some reason the mud just isn’t pumping! You wouldn’t believe how common of a problem this is for people starting out with this automatic drywall taping tool. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with the most common reasons for this problem as well as the easiest fixes.

The (Most Likely) Reasons Your Taper isn’t Filling

1. The gate valve is open / the clutch is disengaged (i.e. taper is not in “fill-mode”).

2. The compound pump isn’t drawing mud.

How to Fix these Problems

1. Check that the gate valve is closed by ensuring that the round disc is pushed in and held in place. This can be tested by manually turning the drive dog key counterclockwise and seeing that the top wheel is not rotating.

2. There are several potential fixes to the pump not drawing mud:

  • Make sure that there is enough mud in the bucket.
  • Ensure there are no blockages in the pump by engaging it without inserting the gooseneck into the filler valve of the taper. Mud should be flowing out consistently and making a right mess (with no air pockets!).

Pro tip: Put down a mud pan or taping knife underneath the gooseneck before pumping so spilled mud can be easily transferred back into the bucket for use.

  • Make sure the taping tool is clear of blockages by inspecting it thoroughly. Also, make sure to always clean the taper thoroughly after every use.
